Arts Little Tokyo (ALT) is a coalition of artists and arts producers that works to sustain Little Tokyo’s history, art, culture, and economy by:
Supporting existing arts and cultural programming
Creating new opportunities for artists to create and showcase work
Cultivating new partnerships between small businesses and the arts
Sharing skills and resources with the community
We envision a Little Tokyo that continues to be an artistic and cultural hub for Japanese American and broader Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) artists, producers, and cultural bearers. Arts and culture have been foundational to the growth of Little Tokyo—including early Buddhist temples, Nisei Week Festival in 1934, the establishment of AAPI arts organizations like Visual Communications in the 1970s, and Tuesday Night Project in the 1990s. Little Tokyo is now home to countless cultural assets to our city and nation, including:
Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, one of the nation’s largest cultural arts center
Japanese American National Museum, the largest museum sharing the Japanese American experience
East West Players, the nation’s longest-running theatre of color
Visual Communications, the longest-running AAPI media arts organization
Tuesday Night Project, the longest-running AAPI open mic series
Cold Tofu, the longest-running AAPI improv comedy group
